Truck Driver in Critical Condition Following Crash with Hazmat on 202 Parkway Wednesday Morning

A tractor trailer driver is in critical condition following an early-morning crash on the Route 202 Parkway in Montgomery Township.

Police were dispatched to the intersection of the 202 Parkway and Welsh Road at 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 18 for a report of a vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer. Investigators said a 33-year-old male from Manchester, Pa. was traveling southbound on the parkway in a 2021 Peterbilt with a 2018 Wabash trailer when he failed to negotiate a right curve and traveled across the oncoming northbound lanes. The truck then continued off the roadway, where it struck multiple signs, a pedestrian signal, and a traffic signal, according to police.

"The impact caused significant damage to the truck, which resulted in the operator sustaining severe injuries,” said Montgomery Township Police Lieutenant Gerry Dougherty. "The operator was transported by VMSC to Abington Hospital and is currently in critical condition.”

Dougherty said the crash caused severe damage to the traffic signal, which required it to be replaced and led to an extended road closure. A significant amount of vehicle fluid was also spilled onto the roadway, which required specialized cleanup, Dougherty said.

As of 1 p.m. Wednesday, the parkway remains closed between Knapp Road and Dekalb Pike, and Welsh Road remains closed between Stump Road and Dekalb Pike, according to police.

Montgomery Township Police were assisted on scene by units from Lower Gwynedd Township Police, Upper Gwynedd Township Police Department, Fire Department of Montgomery Township, Montgomery Township Fire Police, Chalfont Fire Police, Colmar Fire Police, Fairmount Fire Police, Horsham Township Fire Police, Center Square Fire Police, Wissahickon Fire Police, North Penn Fire Police, and VMSC Emergency Medical Services.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Montgomery Township Police Department at 215-362-2301.
