Perkasie Man Charged with Aggravated Assault After Flicking Lit Cigarette into Officer’s Face, Police Say

Thomas Grimes, 39, of Perkasie.

A Perkasie man is facing charges after he allegedly flicked a cigarette into a police officer’s face during an incident on Walnut Street in Perkasie Thursday evening.

Thomas Grimes, 39, has been charged with one felony count of aggravated assault against designated individuals along with a misdemeanor count of simple assault and a summary county of harassment in connection with the Oct. 12 incident.

Grimes is currently being held at the Bucks County Correctional Facility in lieu of 10% of $50,000 cash bail.

Police were dispatched to the 400 block of East Walnut Street at 6 p.m. for a report of a disturbance, with the caller stating a male – later identified as Grimes – was pounding on the rear door of an apartment. Police located Grimes sitting on the steps, at which point he stated he was trying to get into his house, according to charging documents.

Investigators said Grimes had slurred speech, unsteady balance, and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Following unsuccessful attempts by Grimes to make contact with anyone inside of the home, police asked Grimes for his girlfriend’s phone number in an attempt to give him access to the apartment, however Grimes became aggressive and stood in an officer’s face, police said.

Police said they guided Grimes away from them several times, at which point Grimes flicked a lit cigarette, which struck an officer in the right cheek area. He was then taken into custody, with police noting he "passively resisted arrest.”

Grimes was arraigned on the charges Friday afternoon, and his next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Regina Armitage.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
