Two Students to be Charged in Altercation at North Penn High School Involving Knife

The investigation into a fight at North Penn High School earlier this month will lead to criminal charges against two students, according to Towamencin Township Police Chief Tim Troxel.

Police were dispatched to the school at 12:46 p.m. on Oct. 2 for what was initially reported as a knife that was found on a student. North Penn School District officials said two students were involved in an altercation in a hallway when one of the students — later identified by police as a 16-year-old male — allegedly brandished a knife.

School officials said staff were able to talk the student into putting the knife away without injury to anyone involved.

“Staff members were on site throughout the altercation and are to be commended for stepping in to ensure the safety of all students,” said North Penn High School Principal Kyle Hassler, in an email alerting parents to the incident.

A criminal investigation was launched following the altercation, which included viewing in-school surveillance footage and interviews with witnesses and those directly involved in the incident.

“After speaking with the involved parties, teachers, and school security, we were able to get what we feel is an accurate account of the incident,” Troxel said. “It was a fight between two students, and both will be getting charged in the incident.”

Troxel added that charges are forthcoming, pending final approval from the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.

School officials previously acknowledged that the student who allegedly brandished the knife would face disciplinary action in addition to any criminal charges being filed. Sources tell North Penn Now the student was suspended and could face further action, however the district declined to comment on any specific disciplinary action taken.

"Ensuring the safety of our students and staff is our number one priority,” said Christine Liberaski, Director of School and Community Engagement for North Penn School District. “Although we cannot comment on individual students and disciplinary consequences, I will say that all students who engage others in a threatening manner will be disciplined according to NPSD Discipline Code."

It’s unclear if the second student to face charges was disciplined by the school district.

Troxel said he would provide an update on the investigation once charges have been approved by the district attorney’s office.
