Hatfield Man Caught with Loaded Handgun in Carry-On Bag at Philadelphia International Airport

This gun was caught by TSA officers at a Philadelphia International Airport checkpoint on Oct. 11.

A Hatfield man is accused of attempting to bring a loaded firearm through a security checkpoint at the Philadelphia International Airport on Wednesday.

According to a release from the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA), the man attempted to bring a loaded .45 caliber handgun through a security checkpoint. The x-ray unit alerted his carry-on bag, and upon further inspection, the firearm was discovered.

“Let me be very clear when I say that there is absolutely no excuse for bringing a gun to our checkpoints,” said Christine Assili, TSA’s Deputy Federal Security Director for the airport. “You certainly can’t carry a firearm onto your flight, so don’t bring one to our checkpoint and expect to bring it on board. This was a good catch on the part of our TSA team here at Philadelphia. Our officers are good at their jobs and are very vigilant when it comes to helping ensure that no illegal or prohibited items are carried onto a flight.”

Investigators said the man, whose identity has not been released, was cited by police and he’ll face a “stiff financial civil penalty” upwards of $15,000 for attempting to bring the firearm through the checkpoint.

Since 2017, 225 firearms have been caught by the TSA at the Philadelphia International Airport, including 36 so far in 2023, according to the TSA.

The man’s firearm was confiscated by police at the scene.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using information provided by the Transportation Safety Administration.
