Peppe Steaks in Souderton Holds Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Micaela Chiaro, wife of operator Joe Chiaro, cuts the ribbon at Peppe Steaks’ grand opening ceremony.

Peppe Steaks celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 6.

Joined by Souderton Mayor Dan Yocum, co-owner Micaela Chiaro cut the ribbon amidst a bustling opening, featuring live music and free samples of the shop’s combination sandwiches.

The independently-owned cheesesteak and sandwich shop is operated by Joseph Chiaro, owner of the Burger Shop in Souderton and co-owner of the popular Italian restaurant, Caruso Brick Oven Trattoria, which Chiaro’s parents closed in April after announcing their retirement.

Chiaro’s father, Gaetano, is among the area’s most well-traveled chefs, having worked in kitchens across Western Europe and North America. A native of Naples, Italy, he moved to New York City as a budding chef where he briefly worked at his uncle’s pizza shop on Long Island before moving back to Europe. He later returned to the United States with his son and daughter-in-law, Micaela.

“We came here and opened a little restaurant a long time ago. And then we moved here to Souderton and opened Caruso,” said Micaela. “We realized there’s no good cheesesteak place in town, so little by little, we came up with this.”

With Peppe Steaks, the Chiaros are offering freshly-made combination sandwiches, including a classic ribeye steak sandwich, a roast pork sandwich and a “go birds” sandwich made with chicken cutlet, mushrooms, basil pesto and mozzarella.

“We have good quality meat, fresh bread, high-quality cheese; a good combination,” said Micaela Chiaro. “Hopefully for Souderton, it’s the best cheesesteak.”

Patrons can also customize their sandwiches, choosing the protein, rolls, cheese, sauce and toppings. Rounding out the menu is macaroni and cheese, fries, Mexican corn and water ice.

The restaurant, a BYOB, boasts an 80s and 90s theme with indoor seating for approximately 20 customers. Micaela expressed optimism about the shop’s prospects.

“The community really likes local shops, so I’m sure they’re gonna be happy with us,” she said.

She concluded with a message of gratitude to the community.

“Thanks to Souderton and all the people in the community that have supported us since we opened Caruso, then the Burger Shop and now this one,” she said. “And I wish a lot of success for my family.”
