Join the Historical Society of Montgomery County (HSMC) on Saturday, Oct. 28, for a special event to thank all our friends in the community.
HSMC is hosting an afternoon autumn event at Historic Montgomery Cemetery. Gates will be open from 1 p.m. to sunset.
At your leisure, take a self-guided tour of the cemetery using one of our brochures or using our YouTube videos. Volunteers and staff will be available to answer questions, help find a gravesite, or point out some of the more interesting sites within the cemetery.
With almost 6,000 known burials, Historic Montgomery Cemetery holds the remains of some of the most prominent citizens, veterans, and reformers in the county and nation. From five Civil War generals, including Winfield Scott Hancock and John F. Hartranft, to many captains of industry, it tells the story of the nation through the lives it represents.
1 p.m. – 2 p.m. – Experience the cemetery with a guided tour. This walking tour examines the changing cultural beliefs in America surrounding death and dying.
2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. – An event you don’t want to miss! Masters of the Skies will join us for a “meet and greet” with at least one of their birds. French native Gregory Wojtera is a Master Falconer who has worked with almost 50 raptors in the past 12 years. He trains and flies hawks, falcons, and owls for a variety of purposes including hunting, falconry abatement (bird control), and education. He created Masters of the Skies in 2014 to educate the general public about birds of prey and falconry, and he has been working as a full-time falconer and educator since 2016.
3 p.m. to 4 p.m. – Bring a blanket or chair and hang out with us as we listen to live music! This Music @ the Cemetery event will feature Richard Lentz: a talented musician performing popular songs from the 1950s through the 1980s.
4 p.m. to 5 p.m. – Cold Case Mysteries Tour. One was strangled and the others were murdered… by pie? These two cold cases date back to the late 1800s in Norristown. The question still remains: who murdered Jane Dotts, Charles Garber, and Ivens Steinbright? Join Curator Karen Ploch as she uncovers the stories surrounding these two cold cases at Historic Montgomery Cemetery. This special talk will involve walking and standing on uneven ground at the cemetery. This event is pet friendly.
5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. – Sunset / Moonrise Tour: Join us for a walking tour of the cemetery as the sun sets and the moon rises! This tour will feature a general history of the cemetery with lots of great photo opportunities as the sun sets and the moon rises above the cemetery grounds.
