Man Hospitalized After SUV Veers Off Bethlehem Pike and Goes Airborne

A man was hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after his SUV left the roadway off Bethlehem Pike, struck a ditch and went airborne, then struck another vehicle.

First responders were dispatched to the 700 block of North Bethlehem Pike in Lower Gwynedd Township at 3:19 p.m. on Oct. 4 for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries and entrapment. Investigators said a black SUV left the roadway and went into a small ditch that launched the vehicle airborne. The SUV then clipped an unoccupied pickup truck while airborne, knocked down a light pole, struck a utility pole, and came to rest in front of a nearby car dealership.

The driver of the SUV — identified by police as a male in his 50’s — had to be rescued from his vehicle by units from the Wissahickon Fire Company, and he was subsequently transported from the scene via ambulance to Abington Hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries.

No other injuries were reported, police said.

Both the SUV and the pickup truck were extensively damaged and were towed from the scene, police said. Photos from the scene also show damage to the landscape surrounding the car dealership.

Portions of Bethlehem Pike were closed due to the crash, police said, with the roadway reopening approximately one hour after the crash. Lower Gwynedd Police were assisted at the scene by units from the Ambler Borough Police Department, Ambler Ambulance, and Wissahickon Fire Company.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, and investigators are awaiting an interview with the driver. Police said there was nothing suspicious about the incident, and it’s unknown at this time if any charges will be filed.
