Student Journalists to Host North Penn School Board Candidate Debate

With the November election fast approaching, community members will have a chance to hear from several North Penn school board candidates next week.

North Penn High School’s Knight Crier student-run newspaper will host a school board candidate forum at the high school, 1340 Valley Forge Road in Towamencin, at 7 p.m. on Oct. 11.

“This event will immerse our journalism students in the worlds of both journalism and local politics as we also work to engage the community in an important election,” said Knight Crier Executive Editor Kate Miller.

In the Nov. 7 election, incumbent Democrats Elisha Gee, Tim MacBain, Juliane Ramic and Cathy Wesley are all running for second four-year terms on the “North Penn Neighbors for Progress” team, joined by newcomer Kunbi Rudnick.

They are being challenged on the Republican side of the ballot by new candidates Vince Altieri, Diana Blystone and Liz Vazquez running together as “North Penn Voices 4 All,” and Adam Breaux and Michael R. Jowder as “North Penn United.”

Most of those candidates answered several questions about their positions and perspectives for the Lansdale AAUW’s 2023 Voters’ Guide, which recently appeared in a five-part series in The Reporter and are available under the “Election” header of our website.

The Knight Crier forum will be the fourth held by the publication since 2017, according to Miller, and prior such debates have been streamed live online by the district’s student-run NPTV channel. As of this week, candidates Altieri, Blystone, MacBain, Ramic, Rudnick, Vazquez and Wesley have confirmed they will participate, and topics will include the high school referendum and planned renovations, the district’s curriculum policy and equity, and school safety, according to the Knight Crier.

“The forum will help voters in the North Penn school district learn more about the candidates running in the upcoming election as well as their views on important matters regarding the community,” Miller said.
