Upper Gwynedd Township Police Chief David Duffy has released the details from Monday’s bomb scare at the Wawa located at the intersection of Welsh Road and Dekalb Pike.
Police were called to the scene at 11:46 a.m. for a report of a suspicious package placed in a trash can by the front entrance doors of the Wawa. The package was described as a black, metal square case approximately 12-by-10-inches in width and four inches in height.
Personnel from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad ultimately determined the package did not contain anything harmful.
"Based on my officers’ training and experience, the appearance of the object, as well as where, when and how it was placed, Sergeant Harry Colcher correctly decided to err on the side of caution and have the Bomb Squad respond,” Duffy said. "I am glad it turned out to not be a dangerous device. We appreciate the patience of the Wawa employees and customers while we conducted our investigation.”
The scene was ultimately cleared at 1:15 p.m., Duffy said.
Investigators said they believe they know who placed the package in the trash can, and are working to get in touch with them.
"No charges will be filed,” Duffy said. "However, we will certainly need to give the person some guidance regarding their actions.”
Upper Gwynedd Police were assisted at the scene by units from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Pennsylvania State Police.
