Energy Drink Theft from Giant in Hatfield Leads to Ninth Retail Theft Arrest for Local Man, Police Say

A Quakertown man has been arrested for the ninth time on retail theft charges after he allegedly stole more than $300 in energy drinks from the Giant Food Store in Hatfield.

Hatfield Police were dispatched to the 1500 block of Cowpath Road on Oct. 12 to take a report of a retail theft that allegedly occurred on Sept. 10. Investigators said a man — later identified as 30-year-old Chase Vorhauer — entered the store at 6:12 p.m., placed multiple packs of Monster Energy and Red Bull into a shopping cart, then exited without paying.

Vorhauer was observed entering the rear driver’s side door of a gray sedan, which then left the area at 6:21 p.m., according to the criminal complaint.

The incident was captured on in-store surveillance footage, and store security said they identified the suspect as Vorhauer due to prior thefts at multiple other Giant locations, police said. Additionally, investigators said they had previously arrested Vorhauer for stealing from the same store in 2021, and he was later found guilty of felony conspiracy to commit retail theft in that case.

In the new case, Vorhauer is accused of stealing four four-packs of Monster Energy, three 12-packs of Monster Energy, five 12-packs of Red Bull, and 10 four-packs of Red Bull, with a total value of $345.38, police said.

Charges were filed against Vorhauer on Nov. 2, and he was arraigned that morning by Magisterial District Judge Jodi Griffis, who set bail at $500 cash. Court records show a probation detainer was filed, and Vorhauer remains in custody at the county jail.

Vorhauer was previously arrested on retail theft charges for the eighth time in September, following an alleged retail theft from Weis Markets on Valley Forge Road in Upper Gwynedd Township. The most recent Hatfield Township charges indicate the day of the alleged offense occurred between the time the charges were filed in Upper Gwynedd on Sept. 6 and his arrest on Sept. 15.

Bail in that case was set at $1,000 unsecured, however he has remained in custody since that time due to a detainer being filed.

Court records show Vorhauer also has an open felony retail theft case out of Upper Moreland Township dating back to Sept. 23. He is currently awaiting formal arraignment at county court in that case.

Vorhauer’s next court appearance on the new charges is a preliminary hearing on Nov. 29 at 1 p.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Ed Levine.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
