Montgomery County Intermediate Unit has been named recipient of a 2023 Bureau of Justice STOP School Violence Prevention grant. The $1 million grant will expand emergency planning and preparedness for students with disabilities and provide threat assessment training for building support staff, according to an MCIU press release.
MCIU will collaborate with local law enforcement, school staff, and parents to complete the work of the grant from Oct. 1, 2023, to Sept. 30, 2026.
In order to expand emergency planning for students with disabilities, MCIU will develop a comprehensive template and training protocol for school personnel and local law enforcement to address the unique needs of these students, the release stated.
Local schools will receive support in updating their emergency plans to include personalized strategies for students with disabilities, involving parents through dedicated training and input sessions.
The grant will also improve threat assessment training for building-level support staff, including custodians, aides, and secretarial staff. New hires will receive training on a newly developed, specialized curriculum through innovative video-based options, MCIU stated.
MCIU will launch a countywide public relations campaign to emphasize the critical role of all community members in maintaining school safety. This grant reaffirms MCIU’s dedication to creating safe and secure learning environments for Montgomery County students and staff. The projects developed under this grant will serve as a model for enhancing school safety across regions.
