4 Residents Displaced After Weekend Fire Causes Heavy Damage to Home in Lansdale Borough

Four people were displaced by a fire early Sunday morning that caused heavy damage to their home in Lansdale Borough.

First responders were dispatched to the intersection of Hancock Street and the Liberty Trail at 5:05 a.m. on May 28 for a report of a building fire at a multi-family home. Dispatch notes indicate there was smoke showing from the rear of the home, and arriving police encountered heavy fire at the rear of the home.

Crews worked to suppress the blaze and officially had the fire under control by 5:48 a.m., according to Fairmount Fire Chief Gavin Butler, who added that the home suffered heavy fire damage across the first floor and major smoke damage throughout the rest of the home. A detached garage to the rear of the property suffered minor heat damage, and at least one vehicle in the driveway suffered significant heat damage, Butler said.

No damage was observed to neighboring homes.

At least four residents were displaced as a result of the blaze, who are currently being assisted by the American Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Crews remained on scene until approximately 10:30 a.m.

Fairmount Fire Company was assisted at the scene by units from Towamencin Fire Company, North Penn Fire Company, Hatfield Fire Company, Colmar Fire Company, Fire Department of Montgomery Township, Upper Gwynedd Fire Department, and Lansdale Borough Police.

Sunday’s fire was the second incident over a five-day period that fire crews were dispatched near the Andale Green development, following a fast-spreading field fire along the Liberty Bell Trail last Wednesday night.

In that incident, units from the Fairmount Fire Company were dispatched to the intersection of Almond and Bamboo drives in the Andale Green development at 8:06 p.m. for a report of a field fire. Arriving fire crews encountered a 50-foot by 300-foot section of tall grass and brush that had caught fire, with winds causing the blaze to quickly spread and endangering nearby homes.

The cause of that fire remains undetermined and is still under investigation.
