Man Suffers Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound While Running from Police in Lower Gwynedd

A Philadelphia man has suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound after running from police in Lower Gwynedd Township.

The incident initially began around 4:45 p.m. on May 20 when a Pennsylvania State Police trooper made contact with the driver of a disabled vehicle near the intersection of Bethlehem Pike and Welsh Road. A source with knowledge of the incident, who requested anonymity as they are not authorized to speak with the media, told North Penn Now that police requested backup for an unknown reason, at which point the driver — identified as a 23-year-old Philadelphia man — fled the scene on foot with police giving chase.

The name of the male subject is being withheld by this news organization pending confirmation by police.

The male subject fled through multiple areas including the Treweryn Farm Trail before later entering the woods near the Spring House Nursery on Bethlehem Pike. A short time later, police reported shots fired, and the subject was located suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The wound appears to be fatal, however police have not confirmed that detail at this time, according to our source.

Multiple roads across the area continue to remain shutdown and the scene remains active.

A search of court records using the name and date of birth provided for the subject shows an active court case out of Philadelphia on charges of rape, unlawful restraint, sexual assault, incest, corruption of minors, false imprisonment, and indecent assault. The charges list the date of offense as July 1, 2018, and the date of arrest as Feb. 3, 2022.

Court records show the subject was free on 10% of $125,000 cash bail, and the last action item on the docket was a motion for a continuance filed by prosecutors on March 14.
