DNA Links Montco Man to Catalytic Converter Thefts in Towamencin, Police Say

An East Greenville man is facing charges after DNA evidence allegedly linked him to a trio of July 2021 catalytic converter thefts that occurred in Towamencin Township.

Derek Amoss, 22, has been charged with three felony counts of theft by unlawful taking and three felony counts of receiving stolen property in connection with the investigation. He’s currently being held at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility, where he’s serving a 10-to-23-month jail sentence after pleading guilty to theft charges out of Franconia Township in November 2022.

Police were dispatched to Integrated Service Solutions along the 1500 block of Bustard Road on July 20, 2021, for a report of three stolen catalytic converters that had been cut from three Honda Element vehicles. Investigators said the stolen converters had a combined value of $6,000, and they recovered pieces of blue disposable gloves at the scene that were later sent for DNA testing.

In February, investigators were provided with testing results that showed the DNA inside of the gloves was a match to a convicted offender, identified as Amoss, who was serving a jail sentence after being convicted of stealing other catalytic converters across the area, police said. Investigators then conducted an interview with Amoss, who confessed to stealing the converters, according to charging documents.

Amoss has a preliminary hearing on the new charges scheduled for May 17 at 1:45 p.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Ed Levine.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
