Target Manager Arrested After Stealing More Than $44,000 in Store Cash Deposits, Police Say

A manager at the Montgomeryville Target has been arrested after he allegedly stole more than $44,000 from the store’s cash deposits over the last several months.

Carl Oscar, 27, of Montgomery Township, has been charged with felony counts of theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property in connection with the investigation by the Montgomery Township Police Department. He is currently free on $5,000 unsecured bail.

Police were contacted Wednesday morning by one of the store’s asset protection employees who reported that between March 22 and April 16, $31,458 in cash deposits had gone missing. Investigators said Oscar was the employee who placed the cash deposits on those dates, and after learning of the missing deposits, the employee placed a hidden camera in the cash office.

Between April 26 and April 30, the hidden surveillance footage captured Oscar stealing $13,527 by taking the cash from the deposit bags and concealing it in his pants, police said. Total documented cash that has been stolen was $44,985, according to charging documents.

On Wednesday morning, Oscar was again observed stealing $520 from a cash deposit bag, however he returned it to asset protection while police were on scene, investigators said. During an interview with police, Oscar reportedly confessed that he began stealing approximately $10,000 a month from the cash deposit bags in January and advised that he had stolen an estimated $60,000 total, according to police.

Oscar was arraigned Wednesday evening, and his next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on May 23 at 11:30 a.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Andrea Duffy.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
