Days After Being Sentenced to Time Served for Forgery, Man Arrested for Stealing $900 in Merch from Wegmans, Police Say

A Philadelphia man with an extensive criminal history in Montgomery County was arrested again less than a week after being sentenced to time served on a felony forgery charge.

Clifton Brandon, 44, pleaded guilty on Feb. 27 to felony counts of forgery, identity theft, and theft by unlawful taking, and was sentenced to 71 days of time served followed by two years’ probation.

Less than a week from his release, Brandon was arrested on March 3 in Montgomery Township on felony charges of retail theft and receiving stolen property, after he allegedly stole $959.71 worth of merchandise from Wegmans at the Montgomery Mall. Brandon was subsequently released on $10,000 unsecured bail following his preliminary arraignment, court records show.

In the days that followed his arrest in Montgomery Township, Brandon was arrested another two times on felony retail theft charges in Philadelphia on March 10 and Cheltenham Township on March 16, court records show. In the Philadelphia incident, Brandon was released on his own recognizance following arraignment, however he was later taken into custody on a probation detainer in Montgomery County after his arraignment on the Cheltenham charges.

According to county records, Brandon has an extensive criminal history with criminal convictions dating back to 1999. Among the charges Brandon previously pleaded guilty to include criminal trespassing, forgery, retail theft, burglary, robbery, and drug offenses. He has also served multiple county jail and state prison sentences over that period, records show.

Brandon’s next court appearance on the Montgomery Township charges is a preliminary hearing on May 3.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
