Manna Launches Partnership with North Penn Police Departments to Provide Food Bags to People in Need

Manna on Main Street and six local police departments are launching a partnership on Wednesday, March 8, to assist persons in the North Penn region who are facing hunger by providing food bags.

Manna is the North Penn region’s largest nonprofit working to end hunger and serves over 5,000 people annually. The police departments participating in the partnership with Manna are Hatfield, Lansdale, Montgomery Township, North Wales, Towamencin, and Upper Gwynedd.

While responding to various emergencies, law enforcement officers often encounter residents who are facing hunger and are in need of food, according to the police chiefs of the six police departments. Previously, officers could — and did — suggest that persons go to Manna for food. Now, the officers will be able to offer bags filled with food to residents in need.

“The chiefs of the member departments and their officers are on the frontline in coming into contact with people in need of food,” the six police chiefs said in a joint statement. “The situation people are in changes constantly. We are happy to be a part of this program, all with the hope of making someone’s life better, if only for a few moments. Once we can get people some food and possibly some lodging, we can all work on getting things back on track for them.”

Also participating in the partnership is the National Alliance on Mental Health of Montgomery County.

The bags from Manna contain non-perishable items such as beverages, shelf-stable milk, cereal, packaged meat, peanut butter and jelly, fruit cups, and crackers, along with some household and hygiene supplies. The bags also contain information about how to access ongoing programs and services from Manna such as meals, groceries, showers, emergency financial assistance, and foodservice job training.

“At Manna, we believe that no one should be forced to go without food, that no one should be forced to go hungry, anywhere, let alone in the second wealthiest county in Pennsylvania,” said Sheldon C. Good, director of development and strategic direction at Manna. “We are grateful to our law enforcement partners for their commitment to offering food to persons who need it, and we are grateful to our generous community for their ongoing support of Manna and all those we serve, especially at this critical moment of increased need.”
