Shoppers can get more done at Home Depot in Hilltown on a full stomach, now that an Italian sausage shop has opened directly outside the store.
Rocco’s Italian Sausage, a cheesesteak and sandwich shop founded in South Philadelphia in 2006, became the company’s first suburban location, according to BucksCo Today.
Of the seven locations Rocco’s Italian Sausage operates, five of them are outside Home Depot stores. In addition to cheesesteaks and sandwiches, Rocco’s offers grilled chicken and breakfast items, as well as coffee.
According to BucksCo Today, the founder Richard "Rocco" Guardino opened the first Rocco's Italian Sausage in South Philadelphia in 2006.
Guardino was inspired by his brother-in-law's hot dog franchise named Dominic's of New York outside a few Lowe's and Home Depot stores in Long Island City, New York, where he had contracts with the stores for open food stands, according to Philly Voice. He took the hot dog concept and added Philly cheesesteaks and Italian sausage to the menu.
In doing so, Guardino landed a unique niche: Hungry DIYers could fill up on home improvement supplies and fill up their stomachs at the same time. The first locations were the Home Depot on Columbus Boulevard in South Philly and the Home Deport on Castor Avenue in Port Richmond, according to Philly Voice.
