On June 23, as part of her victory in May’s Hydrant design contest, Kalissie Loftus was taken to the North Penn Water Authority’s (NPWA) operations center on Forty Foot Road in Towamencin to paint her winning design “Bob” on one of their fire hydrants.
As a part of National Drinking Water Week, an initiative of the American Water Works Association to promote the importance of drinking clean water in our day to day lives, kids in the North Penn area took part in an annual contest where students in grades Kindergarten to fifth were tasked with coming up with creative and unique designs to be painted onto a fire hydrant. Kalissie, who was a third grader at the time of submitting her design, was one such student.
The contest was held from May 8 through May 11, garnering almost 60 entries, and afterwards, the staff of NPWA came together and voted Kalissie’s design as the winner.
“We thank all of the kids who designed and submitted a fire hydrant for our Drinking Water Week contest; we look forward to seeing the creative designs each year,” said Anthony Bellitto Jr., executive director of NPWA.
As a reward for her winning design, not only did Kalissie get to realize her work with the help of the NPWA, but she was also awarded with a $50 Visa gift card.
Kalissie’s winning fire hydrant will be on display alongside a sign detailing her name, age, municipality, and her original design as it was drawn on paper until next year’s contest.
