A Jenkintown man is facing charges in connection with an attempted home invasion at the Pheasant Run Apartments along the 100 block of Main Street in Lower Salford Township, according to police.
Lamarr Cotton, 27, has been charged with felony counts of burglary and attempted burglary, along with misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of children and loitering and prowling at nighttime, in connection with the Feb. 21 incident. He is currently free on $20,000 unsecured bail, following his arraignment last Monday.
Police were dispatched to the apartment complex at 11:28 p.m. for a report of an unknown man attempting to gain access to a residence. Arriving officers spoke with the victim, who stated she encountered a Black male with dreadlocks and an orange shirt climbing in through her kitchen window, however he retreated and fled on foot towards a vehicle upon seeing the woman, according to the criminal complaint.
Investigators said they located the vehicle, which was running and was unlocked with three children asleep inside. At that time, police saw a suspect matching the victim’s description — later identified as Cotton — peering from behind a wall at one of the residential units, and he was subsequently taken into custody without incident, police said.
Cotton told police that he did not live at the Pheasant Run Apartments, nor did he know anyone who lived there, however he stopped there and left his children inside of the vehicle while he went to urinate behind one of the residential units, according to charging documents. He was taken to the scene of the alleged attempted home invasion, at which point the victim positively identified him and he was placed under arrest, according to the complaint.
Court records show Cotton was officially charged on Feb. 27, but he wasn’t arraigned until June 19. The criminal complaint does not indicate why there was a delay between the charges being filed and the date of arraignment. His next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on July 3 at 10 a.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Albert Augustine.
(Editor’s note: Criminal complaints, along with the Affidavit of Probable Cause contained within, only become publicly available once the defendant has been arraigned, meaning the details within this story only became available last week despite the alleged incident occurring several months prior.)
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
