A Gwynedd Mercy University music educator is one step closer to a Grammy.

Carol Evans, assistant professor of music and director of The Voices of Gwynedd at the college, has entered the quarterfinals with 199 other contenders for the Grammy’s 2024 Music Educator Award, according to Linda Finarelli of The Ambler Gazette.

When Evans received the initial email two months ago, she thought it may be a scam.

“They asked for further information and my resume and recent contributions where I taught. I didnt hear anything until maybe a month ago, when I got another email that out of 2,000 [nominees] I was one of 200 quarterfinalists. Its pretty exciting, actually,” Evans said, in the article.

According to the report, the award is presented by the Recording Academy and Grammy Museum and recognizes educators like Evans who made significant and everlasting contributions to music education and dedicated themselves to maintain music education in schools.

Now, the museum requires Evans to submit more information, including videos of her work, student testimonials and more.

Evans started teaching at Gwynedd Mercy University in 1993 and believes music is a tool for students to experience great things and boost collaboration, communication, and confidence, per the report.

The 100-plus co-ed ensemble The Voices of Gwynedd grew under Evans’ tutelage from 12 women to an enriching choir of all genders from the school and the community at-large. They have performed around the world. According to the report, in 2022, the choir sang the national anthem at a Phillies game and recently won a competition to sing for an Eagles game in front of 60,000 people.
