A New York woman is in custody at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility after she allegedly attempted to cash a fraudulent check at the TD Bank in Montgomeryville late last month.
Kelly Holt, 46, of Medina, has been charged with felony counts of forgery and identity theft, along with misdemeanor counts of bad checks, posing an instrument of crime, possession of a controlled substance and theft by deception. She’s being held at the county jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail.
Montgomery Township Police were dispatched to the 900 block of Bethlehem Pike at 4:51 p.m. on May 25 for a report of a woman attempting to pass a bad check. A bank employee told police that the woman — later identified as Holt — presented a New Jersey license bearing another woman’s name and attempted to deposit a check in the amount of $1,918.14 into the woman’s account while also attempting to withdraw $4,000 from the same account, according to charging documents.
The employee told police they had been alerted to the alleged fraud prior to Holt’s arrival, after she had allegedly attempted to pass the check at another bank nearby, police said.
Arriving police spoke with Holt, who initially identified herself as the account owner but later provided her real name, the report states. Police also determined that the New Jersey license bearing the account holder’s name was counterfeit, according to the complaint.
Holt was taken into custody and arraigned the following morning by Magisterial District Judge Margaret Hunsicker. Court records show Holt waived her preliminary hearing and is awaiting her formal arraignment at county court.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
