A Maryland woman is facing charges after she allegedly snatched a $3,000 necklace from a man in Lansdale then attempted to flee the scene.
Daruinta Stirbu, 28, of Baltimore, has been charged with felony counts of theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property in connection with the May 28 incident. She is currently free on $5,000 unsecured bail.
The victim flagged down police at 4:21 p.m. near the intersection of North Cannon Avenue and Mill Street to report that a woman had stolen his necklace. The man said he was with his friends when two women approached and began putting various jewelry on he and his friends, while at the same time removing the necklace he was wearing, according to charging documents.
The women then entered a red SUV with Florida plates and fled the scene before the man could retrieve his necklace, police said.
A second officer on patrol said they observed the red SUV driving into oncoming traffic southbound on Cannon Avenue before making a right onto West Main Street, at which point it began to flee at a high rate of speed. A traffic stop was subsequently initiated, at which point the passenger — identified as Stirbu — provided police with a handful of various jewelry, including the victim’s necklace, police said.
Stirbu was arraigned the following morning and released on unsecured bail pending her preliminary hearing on July 12 at 9:15 a.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Ed Levine.
The second woman was not identified and no other charges have been filed at this time.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
