A married couple from Telford are facing charges after they allegedly broke into a parked motor home in Montgomery Township and stole various items before fleeing the scene on foot.
Steven and Amy Payne, 40 and 39 respectively, have been charged with felony burglary along with misdemeanor counts of theft by unlawful taking and possession of an instrument of crime, following the incident on July 14 along the 1200 block of Welsh Road.
Both are currently free on $10,000 unsecured bail.
Montgomery Township Police were dispatched to the scene just after 7:30 p.m. for a report of a robbery in progress. The victim reported he saw a man and woman inside of his motor home, which was parked outside of Santander Bank, and they fled the scene on foot through a wooded area nearby when confronted, according to the criminal complaint.
Police located the Payne’s along the 100 block of Signal Hill Court, where they were described by police as sweating profusely and out of breath. Both Payne’s matched the victim’s descriptions of the suspect, police said, and a records check indicated Steven Payne was wanted on a failure to appear warrant on a simple assault charge in Bucks County.
The victim showed police the deadbolt to his vehicle had been tampered with, and a check of the interior revealed a power drill had been left behind that police allege was used to gain access to the motor home. Stolen items included a Bluetooth speaker, a Nintendo Switch, sunglasses, a knife, and various other items, according to charging documents.
The Payne’s vehicle, described as a blue Audi sedan, also remained at the scene of the alleged burglary, police said.
Both Payne’s were arraigned the following morning, and then freed after bail was set to unsecured. They both have a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 25 at 9 a.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Michal Quinn, court records show.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
