Lansdale Farmers’ Market to Celebrate 15 Year Anniversary Saturday

In 2008, a group of neighborhood residents, council members and business owners came together to establish the Lansdale Farmers’ Market. And on July 8, the market will celebrate its 15th year anniversary.

The celebration will occur from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with free slices of cake baked by Darnel’s Cakes that will be given out beginning at 10 a.m. for as long as supplies last, as well as a music performance by Bruce Frederick who will be singing “Happy Birthday.” Vendors will also show how long they’ve been at the market at their tents.

“As a volunteer for six years and a customer for longer than that, I am happy to say I know exactly what I’m doing every Saturday morning: meeting up with friends and neighbors to support local farms,” said Mallory Smith Peterson, secretary of the Lansdale Farmer’s Market.

The first market season was held in 2009 and was located at Railroad Plaza near Main and Madison Streets. Among the founders was Carol Zellers, who served on the board of directors until 2022.

The market has supported other local non-profit organizations by giving them space at its community tent, including Garden of Health, Manna on Main Street, the Lansdale Library and Stray Cat Blues.

“Our vendors and volunteers are one big family who help each other,” said Peterson. “We even have multiple vendors’ family members working at other tents.”

In 2019, they undertook a sustainability project by awarding grant money to vendors who made environmental improvements to their business like eliminating single-use packaging. The project was funded by the Jean and Russell Bailey Memorial Fund.

The market will continue to host local live musicians every single week. In October, it will be bringing back the popular Pie Contest, where vendors each bake a pie to enter the contest in which customers sample the pie at the market and vote for their favorite.
