A fundraiser has been launched for a Telford man who died Thursday afternoon after saving two children in distress at Lake Nockamixon.
Officials said 37-year-old Marvin Alexan Fernandez Chicas rescued two children who appeared to be in distress while swimming in the lake around 4:45 p.m. on June 29. Chicas reentered the water near Mountainview Drive in Haycock Township following the rescue, at which point he disappeared.
The Bucks County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene shortly after 7 p.m. after a search for Chicas led to the discovery of his body. An autopsy the following morning listed his cause of death as drowning and manner of death as accidental.
The fundraiser is being organized by Chicas’ sister-in-law, Lesly Canaca, who said donated funds will be used to transport his remains back to his mother in Honduras, with remaining funds to be used for burial expenses and for his 3-year-old son, Dylan.
“He died [drowning] in the lake, giving his life for two children who were also about to drown along with him,” said Canaca. “He became a hero for everyone.”
To date, the fundraiser has generated $63,623 of its $70,000 goal. Click here to donate.
