Woman Who Caused Two Crashes in Towamencin While Suffering Medical Emergency Has Died

A Telford woman who caused a pair of vehicle crashes in Towamencin while suffering a medical emergency last week was pronounced dead over the weekend, North Penn Now has learned.

According to Towamencin Police Chief Tim Troxel, the first crash occurred on Sumneytown Pike around 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 25 in the area of Towamencin Beverage. A 58-year-old Telford woman driving a white 2013 Kia Sorrento struck a white 2021 Ford Explorer, driven by a 37-year-old male from Lansdale.

The Kia then continued traveling eastbound on Sumneytown Pike until it struck a white 2019 Toyota Rav 4 — driven by a 51-year-old female from Harleysville — at the intersection with South Valley Forge Road minutes after the first crash.

“It appears the driver of the Kia was suffering from a medical event, which led to both crashes occurring,” Troxel said last week.

No injuries were reported in the first crash, which resulted in minor damage to both vehicles. At the scene of the second crash, the driver of the Toyota was treated on scene for minor injuries, and the driver of the Kia was transported via ambulance to Grand View Hospital, where it was determined that she had suffered a stroke.

Unfortunately, the woman did not survive the stroke and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 10 p.m. on Jan. 28. A family member of the woman — whose name is being withheld by this news organization — said they are devastated by the loss, but they also expressed gratitude to the bystanders and first responders who attempted to help the victim.

“We want to thank the first responders who acted quickly when they realized our mom/sister/aunt was in the middle of a medical emergency,” said the family member, in a message to North Penn Now. “We would also like to thank the bystanders who witnessed the incident and reached out to first responders for help. We are devastated that we have lost her, but we are extremely grateful that no one else was hurt and that she was in great hands.”

Towamencin Police were assisted at the scene by units from the Upper Gwynedd Police Department and Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
