A pair of related vehicles crashes in Towamencin on Wednesday afternoon were caused by a driver who was suffering from a medical emergency.
According to Towamencin Police Chief Tim Troxel, the first crash occurred on Sumneytown Pike around 4:30 p.m. in the area of Towamencin Beverage. A 58-year-old Telford woman driving a white 2013 Kia Sorrento struck a white 2021 Ford Explorer, driven by a 37-year-old male from Lansdale.
The Kia then continued traveling eastbound on Sumneytown Pike until it struck a white 2019 Toyota Rav 4 — driven by a 51-year-old female from Harleysville — at the intersection with South Valley Forge Road minutes after the first crash.
“It appears the driver of the Kia was suffering from a medical event, which led to both crashes occurring,” said Troxel.
No injuries were reported in the first crash, which resulted in minor damage to both vehicles. At the scene of the second crash, the driver of the Toyota was treated on scene for minor injuries, and the driver of the Kia was transported via ambulance to Grand View Hospital, where it was determined that she had suffered a stroke.
Her current condition is unknown.
Traffic was temporarily closed at the intersection of Sumneytown Pike and Valley Forge Road as both vehicles were blocking traffic and needed to be towed from the scene, which was cleared by 5:25 p.m. Charges are unlikely to be filed as a medical emergency was cited by Troxel as the cause of both crashes.
“The investigation is still on-going, but due to the medical issue with the driver of the Kia being the probable causation factor in both crashes, it is not likely there will be any charges,” Troxel said.
Towamencin Police were assisted at the scene by units from the Upper Gwynedd Police Department and Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale.
