Two Men Charged After Shooting Guns into the Air in Lansdale on New Years, Police Say

It’s become a meme in Lansdale and the surrounding areas to suggest one hears gunshots instead of fireworks — especially on holidays typically associated with fireworks, such as the Fourth of July or New Years Eve. A couple of loud booms from fireworks and someone takes to Facebook, indicating their neighbor’s husband who is an army veteran knows the sound of a gunshot when he hears one.

But sometimes they’re right.

Lansdale Borough Police said such was the case early Sunday morning, when two men were taken into custody after allegedly firing off more than two dozen rounds into the air along the 600 block of North Broad Street.

Officers were dispatched to the scene at 12:08 a.m. on Jan. 1 for a report of a suspect shooting a gun into the air. Investigators located more than 20 rifle shell casings and six handgun shell casings on the ground outside of the residence in question, and subsequently took two men into custody, police said.

Tigh Richardson, 47, and Alexander Richardson, 22, have been charged with misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment and possession of an instrument of crime, as a result of the incident, police said. They both remain free on $5,000 unsecured bail.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 215-368-1801. Tips can also be submitted electronically here.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
