A man who was hit by a train two weeks ago on the railroad tracks near Wissahickon Avenue has been identified and his family located, Upper Gwynedd Township Police have confirmed. The victim, identified as Mario Vargas, remains in critical condition at an area hospital, police said.
Police issued a follow up statement late last week thanking the public for their assistance in identifying Vargas as the victim of the incident, however they stopped short of confirming Vargas was, in fact, the victim.
“Thanks to overwhelming response from many people, we are cautiously optimistic that we have made positive identification and been in contact with close family members,” Upper Gwynedd Township Police Sgt. Stephen Gillen said in a statement. “We sincerely appreciate everyone who assisted us.”
On Thursday morning, Upper Gwynedd Police Chief David Duffy officially confirmed to North Penn Now that Vargas has been confirmed as the victim.
Police said Vargas had no identification on him when police found him severely injured around 6:30 p.m. Dec. 17 on the railroad tracks behind Wissahickon Avenue. According to police, Vargas is from Xochitepec, Guerrero, Mexico.
The investigation into the incident ongoing.
