A Sellersville woman is facing charges after she allegedly abandoned her vehicle in the middle of a road while drinking and driving, and later kicked a police officer in the head while being taken into custody.
Kristie Gorey, 45, was arraigned Wednesday morning on felony charges of aggravated assault and DUI, stemming from her arrest in Sellersville Borough during the early-morning hours of Sept. 24. She is currently free on $100,000 unsecured bail.
Police were dispatched to the intersection of Noble Street and Washington Avenue at 2:29 a.m. for a report of a damaged and disabled black Honda in the middle of the road. Police located the driver — identified as Gorey — stumbling while walking down Eyre Avenue, according to charging documents.
Gorey reportedly ignored police and continued to walk away, police said. Upon police making contact with her, they described her as having slurred speech, difficulty standing, and a strong odor of alcohol emanating from her person, according to the criminal complaint.
Police said Gorey was immediately argumentative and denied that she was driving or had been involved in an accident, adding that she said she had done nothing wrong and was simply walking home. She also refused to submit to field sobriety tests, and she resisted arrest as police attempted to take her into custody, the report states.
Investigators said two bystanders who initially called 911 reported coming upon Gorey’s disabled vehicle in the intersection and stopped to investigate. They told police they observed Gorey exiting the driver’s seat of the vehicle, at which point she began to walk away, according to the complaint.
The report states that the front passenger-side tire on Gorey’s vehicle was badly damaged and had been nearly separated from the wheel. Police also said Gorey was holding the keys to the vehicle in her right hand when they made contact with her.
An ambulance was called to the scene so emergency medical personnel could perform an evaluation; however, Gorey continued to resist and eventually kicked an officer on the right side of their head, police said. Once at the hospital, Gorey declined to consent to blood testing, and she also threatened the same officer that she allegedly kicked in the head, according to police.
A search warrant was later approved for Gorey’s medical records, which showed she had a blood-alcohol content of .215% at the time of the incident, police said. A background check later showed that Gorey was driving on a suspended license and had multiple prior DUI arrests, the report states.
In addition to the felony charges, Gorey has also been charged with misdemeanor counts of simple assault, resisting arrest, operating a vehicle without ignition interlock, and a summary count of driving on a suspended license.
Her next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Jan. 23 at 3:45 p.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Regina Armitage.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
