SEPTA Train Strikes Vehicle Saturday Night in Bucks County

A vehicle that became stuck on railroad tracks was struck by a SEPTA train Saturday evening in Bucks County.

The crash occurred around 7 p.m. on Dec. 16 at the intersection of Walnut Street and Schoolhouse Road in New Britain Township. Sources at the scene said the driver of a Hyundai Veloster was attempting to make a left turn from Schoolhouse Road onto Walnut Street when they mistook the tracks as the road and became stuck.

A bystander attempted to help the driver remove their vehicle from the tracks, however they realized a train was approaching the crossing and both moved to safety. The train conductor engaged their emergency braking system in an attempt to stop, but the train ultimately struck the vehicle, with both the train and the vehicle coming to a rest approximately 10 yards from the point of impact.

Some of the passengers exited the train following the crash, though no injuries were reported. The vehicle was ultimately towed from the scene, and service along the regional rail was suspended as crews worked to clear the scene.

New Britain Township Police were assisted at the scene by units from Chalfont, Hatfield and Colmar fire companies.

The crash occurred less than three weeks after a similar incident occurred in Lansdale Borough. In that crash, a gray Toyota sedan had attempted to go around the activated railroad gates on East Hancock Street between South Broad Street and Church Road, and was ultimately struck after becoming stuck on the tracks.

All occupants were able to exit to safety in that crash, as well.
