In a solemn ceremony last week, the Bucks County’s Board of Commissioners, Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub, and law enforcement officials from across the county lit the Project Blue Light wreath.
The wreath is prominently displayed from the third floor of the rotunda in the Bucks County Administration Building in Doylestown Borough and is adorned with blue lights and white ornaments, each representing one of the county’s fallen officers.
The candles honor the memory of 16 constables, sheriff’s deputies, rangers, and officers who have died in the line of duty.
"The safety and security we enjoy here in Bucks County has not come cheap. It is the result of the service and sacrifice of our county’s law enforcement professionals – some of whom have given the ultimate sacrifice,” said Commissioner Chairperson Bob Harvie. "We’re honored to light this wreath, to speak their names and to keep their memories alive during this holiday season.”
"May our fallen heroes shine forever,” the district attorney’s office said.
Project Blue Light began over 30 years ago and was founded by Dolly Craig of Philadelphia. The county has taken part in the tradition for 15 years.
The observance started in 1988 when Craig placed two blue candle lights in her home window, one for her son-in-law, Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Gleason, who was killed in the line of duty in 1986, and another for her daughter Pam, Gleason’s wife, who died in an auto crash in 1988. The couple left behind six children.
