Nino’s Pizza in Lansdale this week celebrated 60 years in business in the Lansdale area.
“We want to thank all our loyal customers for keeping us in business for 60 years,” wrote Margaret Maltese on the business’s Facebook page. “We couldn’t have done it without you. We have been challenged in a lot of ways throughout the years, but we’ve made it.”
Margaret thanked her staff and brother Phil for all their work and dedication.
“Lansdale we love you!” she wrote. “And thank you for everything! And of course the myth, the king, the legend himself, our father Nino, we will keep your legacy going.”
Patriarch and namesake Nino “Mr Nino” Maltese alas is not here to witness the anniversary, as he passed at 85 in January 2019. The matriarch, Josephine (Biondo) Maltese, would pass away two years later on May 15.
According to his obituary, Nino hailed from Cinisi, Sicily and emigrated to the U.S. in 1956, where he opened more than a dozen pizzerias, from Chalfont to Conshohocken, and Norristown to New Jersey. He sold them all except for Nino’s in Lansdale, which opened in 1966.
“Nino was a Lansdale legend – known as the king of pizza,” stated his obituary. “Nino’s Pizza has been a staple in the community for over 50 years. He was incredibly passionate about his business and his craft.”
According to a North Penn Now memoriam article, Nino’s Pizza claimed, “Pizza started here,” which means Nino’s was likely the first pizza restaurant in Lansdale Borough.
Nino would arrive early each morning to make sure the sauce was perfect, then he would test the dough and check out the equipment.
“He wanted to make sure that everything was just the way he liked it, just as it had always been and just as his patrons always would expect it to be,” stated the article.
Customers and well-wishers expressed gratitude for Nino’s Pizza on its anniversary this week.
“You folks are always one of my first stops when I revisit my old hood,” wrote Charles Cadwell Sr.
“Best pizza, family, and memories,” wrote Patty Macartney.
