Both lanes of northbound Route 309 were closed Wednesday evening as first responders fought a fully involved vehicle fire between the Souderton and Sellersville exits.
Police and fire personnel were dispatched to the scene at 7 p.m. for a report of a vehicle fire. Arriving crews located a four-door Kia Soul along the right lane near mile marker 21.9 that had caught fire, and quickly worked to contain and extinguish the blaze.
The driver of the vehicle told North Penn Now his vehicle stopped accelerating and began smoking and making noises. As he pulled over and the smoke started to thicken, a good Samaritan stopped and alerted the driver to exit the vehicle after seeing sparks shooting from the vehicle’s undercarriage. The driver then exited and moved away from the vehicle, at which point the fire ignited and engulfed the vehicle, according to the driver.
Both lanes of northbound Route 309 were closed for approximately 20 to 30 minutes, before police reopened one lane to allow traffic to pass. The second lane was opened around 7:45 p.m., according to North Penn Now photographer Jimmy James.
No injuries were reported.
Pennsylvania State Police were assisted at the scene by units from Perseverance and Telford fire companies. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
