A multi-vehicle crash on Welsh Road that sent four people to the hospital Friday afternoon remains under investigation as of Tuesday morning, Montgomery Township Police have confirmed.
The crash occurred at 2:42 p.m. on Aug. 4 at the intersection with Gwynedd View Road. Montgomery Township Police Lt. Gerry Dougherty said a BMW 330i and a Dodge Caravan were traveling westbound on Welsh Road when the BMW struck the rear of the Dodge forcing both vehicles to lose control and cross over the double-yellow line into oncoming traffic. At that point, a Ford Explorer that was travelling eastbound struck the passenger side of the Dodge while the BMW struck the driver’s side door of the Explorer, causing it to overturn.
A fourth vehicle — a Ford Mustang also traveling eastbound — then struck the rear passenger side of the BMW, Dougherty said.
The driver of the Explorer — identified as a 34-year-old male from Neffs — became trapped in the overturned vehicle and required extrication from fire crews on scene. Dougherty said the man suffered severe injuries as a result of the crash, and though a medevac was initially called for transport, the man was ultimately transported via ambulance to Abington Memorial hospital for treatment.
He remained hospitalized as of Aug. 5, and his current status is unknown, Dougherty said.
The other three drivers — identified as a 21-year-old male from North Wales, a 45-year-old male from Wyncote, and a 32-year-old female from Lansdale — were also transported from the scene via ambulance to area hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.
Welsh Road was closed from Stump Road to Keystone Drive and Gwynedd View Road was closed at Winding Drive until the scene was cleared at 6 p.m., Dougherty said.
The crash remains under investigation, and it’s currently unknown if any charges will be filed, according to police.
Montgomery Township Police were assisted at the scene by units from the Lower Gwynedd Township Police Department, the Fire Department of Montgomery Township, North Penn Fire Company, VMSC Emergency Medical Services and Ambler EMS.
