American Humane is the country’s first national animal welfare organization. The annual Hero Dog Awards is a nationwide competition that searches for and recognizes dogs in five categories, including therapy dogs, service and guide dogs, military dogs, law enforcement and first responder dogs, and emerging hero dogs, according to its website.

Raina was born blind and deaf. She enjoys swimming in the ocean and hiking mountains. She and her owner have been dedicated to the Blind Dog Rescue Alliance, where they have been raising funds and awareness about the unique needs of dogs like Raina, as well as fostering other dogs with special needs.

Her owner is a music teacher and created the Lending a Paw program, which intertwines music education with community service. Through the program, students perform in fundraising concerts for local shelters. Raina and her owner also collaborated on a public service announcement video about visible and invisible disabilities, which gained recognition from REELabilities, a film organization supporting performers with disabilities.
