A Philadelphia teen is in police custody after crashing a stolen car near the Five Points intersection in Montgomery Township Tuesday morning.
In a phone interview with North Penn Now, Montgomery Township Police Lt. Gerry Dougherty said a stationary license plate reader alerted police to a black Kia Rio that was travelling on Bethlehem Pike which had been reported stolen out of Philadelphia over the weekend. Police said the vehicle had driven over a concrete median on Bethlehem Pike and later crashed in a parking lot at the Five Points intersection.
Following the crash, Dougherty said the teen fled on foot towards David Lane behind the Lowes at Five Points, at which point police lost sight of the suspect and set up a perimeter in the area. By 10 a.m., North Penn Now began receiving multiple reports of a heavy police presence in the area of Cowpath Road and Lansdale Avenue, which was related to the search for the suspect, police said.
Ultimately, the teen was located hiding in a shed in the rear yard of a home on David Lane, and they were subsequently taken into custody. Dougherty described the suspect as a 16-year-old male, however their name and related charges are being withheld due to the age of the accused.
Montgomery Township Police were assisted by units from the Hatfield Township Police Department. The teen remains in custody at the time of publishing.
