Customers Offer Kind Words After Colmar Inn Tavern and Pizzeria Closes Six Months After Opening

After six months in business, Colmar Inn Tavern and Pizzeria have closed their doors as of Sunday, April 2.

In a Facebook post, owner Ed Mitchell wrote:

“Good day friends of the Colmar Inn. We wanted to thank everyone for your love and support. We are sadly closing the bar, to pursue other ventures. Thank you very much for everything." – Mr. Ed

A representative from Colmar Inn Tavern who was contacted via Facebook Messenger declined to go on the record with details. Mitchell, 66, of Philadelphia, declined to comment on the situation during a phone call with North Penn Now.

“I’m not in a position to talk about the future (of the business) and the future of the building,” said Mitchell via phone Wednesday night.

According to Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board records, the hotel liquor license belonging to Colmar Traxx and issued to licensee Mitchell in November 2022 is active until April 30, 2023. The licensee also has an amusement permit for liquor and a Sunday sales permit, according to LCB records.

The 8,727-square-foot building at 102 Bethlehem Pike, tucked between the historic post office building and Yum Yum’s, was built in 1900, according to online public Montgomery County property records. At present, the lot comprises 27,600 square feet, according to county records.

The building contains nine multi-use living units, each with their own bedroom and full bath, totaling 1,640 square feet. The rest is taken up by a 2,000-square-foot restaurant, 400-sqaure-foot bar lounge, and a 3,000-square-foot “support area,” according to county records.

Even though the bar was evanescent, it still gathered a beloved customer base in its short time. It held everything from music-themed trivia “Trivioke” nights with Javier Lopez and karaoke/open mic nights, to music bingo and live music at night. Patrons had their choice of darts, foosball, Nintendo 64, shuffleboard, Jenga, bubble hockey, and Cards Against Humanity games.

Customers who adored the service and food at Colmar Inn and Pizzeria took to Facebook to express their thanks and future success to the owners.

“To all our new friends at Colmar Inn, we so enjoyed your bar and the friendliness in which we were always treated,” wrote Lee Edlund-Schiefer. “We absolutely loved coming in and always felt welcomed.”

Rachel Goodwin Sullivan wrote that she had a blast when they visited and loved the hospitality.

“Though we are sad to hear of this news, we are wishing you the best of luck!” wrote Sullivan.

Gail Gladfelter-Rowen called Colmar Inn Tavern a local “Cheers” for everyone to enjoy.

“We loved our Wednesday nights and will miss you all,” wrote Gladfelter-Rowen.

Connie Glorioso-Remillard felt the same, calling it a great place to meet and talk to people.

“Best of luck with your new adventures,” she wrote.

Brooke Hughes wrote that the tavern had a fun atmosphere, great food, and fantastic service. Mitchell’s son Ed Mitchell Jr. could usually be found in the kitchen, while daughter Rebecca tended bar.

“The staff always made you feel like part of the family as soon as you walked in,” she wrote.

Carla Cas loved the pizza, as did many other customers. Colmar Inn Tavern’s smoked wings, onion rings, and loaded fries were also a hit with clientele.

Andrew Tinneny wrote the Mitchells are a good family and he was sad to hear the news.

“Best of luck to you Ed and your fantastic family,” wrote Allison Hopwood Nace. “It was great meeting all of you. Mark and I enjoyed our Saturday hangouts.”

The property was sold for $350,000 to Mitchell in September 2020, according to county property records, by Janvic Properties LLC, who bought it for $217,000 in 2017 from William Penn Bank.

The original owner since 1973 was Pam’s Tavern Inc., who sold to Colmar Corporation Inc. in 2002 for $377,500. After 13 years, the incorporated entity sold to William Penn Bank for $2,400.

The property is assessed at $268,200, the result of a successful assessment appeal in January 2022 that aimed to lower the assessed value of $319,980 set by the 1998 countywide reassessment. Prior to that, the property was assessed at $11,800. Of the $268,200, the land comprises the most assessed value at $171,460.

Colmar Inn Tavern and Pizzeria is owned by Colmar Traxx Tavern LLC and Edward G. Courchain, according to online state fictitious name records.
