Grocery Outlet Named Lansdale Business Of The Month For September

The first supermarket to open its doors in Lansdale since Super Foodtown shuttered in 2011, the new Grocery Outlet Bargain Market was named Lansdale’s Business of the Month for September at Wednesday’s borough council business meeting.

Grocery Outlet, located at the former Foodtown site, 561 S. Broad Street in the Pavilion Shopping Center, opened its doors just last April to a town hungry for one-stop food shopping in its borders. It stocks a wide array of fresh produce and brands, and highlights an area dedicated to natural and organic products.

The Lansdale Grocery Outlet is part of a 400-location chain, all value-oriented, locally owned, and dedicated to community involvement. Mark Ladley, chair of Lansdale’s Economic Development Committee, said that the corporate commitment suited Todd Orr and Claudia Aguayo, the couple that owns this Outlet.

"This dedication to community is more than just business,” Ladley said. "One reason Claudia and Todd were attracted to Grocery Outlet was that the larger organization emphasizes and incentivizes relationship-building and community service from operators. Every day, they are building those relationships by working with local non-profits and elected officials to donate food for events or causes.”

Both have diverse professional resumes, said Ladley: Aguayo in retail, healthcare, and university administration at a university; Orr in a range of industries, from tech to logistics to health care.”

They made the move to markets, Ladley said, in part because the industry encompasses many of the skills both had already assembled in their careers. "But the real appeal,” Ladley added, "was in the uniqueness of the role itself. Todd shared how running a grocery store allows you to serve your community and its members.”

Grocery Outlet Bargain Market offers high quality groceries to customers at low prices — sometimes more than 40% below its competitors —  thanks to opportunistic purchasing, using contacts with wholesalers and along the supply chain to obtain deals on products whose packaging may have changed or that may have been overstocked.

Since the supermarket opened, said Ladley, "My family and I have had the pleasure of getting to know Todd and his family during our weekly shopping outings. We’ve witnessed just what the Outlet means to them.”

Ladley added that the Grocery Outlet is hiring, offers veterans programs, and hosts senior day discounts every Wednesday. Hours are daily, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. The website is www.groceryoutlet.com; the Facebook page is
