Man Charged with Felony Retail Theft After Stealing $5,400 in Merch from Home Depot, Police Say

A Philadelphia man is facing felony retail theft charges after he allegedly stole more than $5,400 in merchandise via three visits to the Montgomeryville Home Depot.

Michael Lewis, 28, has been charged with three felony counts of retail theft and three misdemeanor counts of receiving stolen property, in connection with the investigation by the Montgomery Township Police Department. He’s currently being held in county jail on a probation/parole detainer.

Investigators were contacted in August by Home Depot Asset Protection regarding a theft that occurred on May 9. Police said Lewis selected seven 250-foot spools of wire, a pair of cables and six deadbolt locks, then exited the store without making payment.

Total loss for the first incident was $2,172, according to charging documents.

Further investigation uncovered two additional visits to the store by Lewis, in which he allegedly stole 25 additional spools of wire, resulting in an additional $3,306.99 loss for the store.

Total loss for the three alleged thefts is $5,478.99.

During an unrelated investigation by the Upper Moreland Township Police Department, Lewis confessed to multiple thefts at the Home Depot in Montgomeryville, police said.

Court records show charges were filed against Lewis in September, and he was subsequently taken into custody. He’s currently awaiting his preliminary hearing.
