A male suspect is in custody following a bomb threat against the Septa Regional Rail Line in Lansdale Monday afternoon.
Lansdale Borough Police began investigating a bomb threat at the West Main Street Transportation Center on Monday afternoon just after 3 p.m., after Montgomery County Dispatch received a call from an unknown male claiming he was on a northbound train to Lansdale with a bomb and he intended to blow the train up.
“The incident is of particular concern given the history of incidents occurring on mass transit systems all over this nation,” said Lansdale Borough Police Chief Michael Trail. “Threats such as these will be fully investigated, and anyone involved in this incident will be prosecuted.”
First responders initially focused their efforts in the area of the Lansdale Train Station, then shifted their attention to the Pennbrook Train Station as the former scene was cleared. Train arms on Hancock Street remained down for an extended period as police conducted their investigation.
Following an extensive search of two trains — aided by members of the Montgomery County Bomb Squad, neighboring police canine units, and statements made by the suspect — investigators ultimately determined there was no bomb on either train.
“Lansdale Police would like to thank our law enforcement partners with the Montgomery County Bomb Squad and area police departments who aided in our investigation,” Trail said. “Their efforts helped [us] close this case quickly and restore calm to our community and Septa passengers.”
Trail did not release the name of the suspect or detail how they were taken into custody, however he stated the male will be arraigned on charges sometime Tuesday. North Penn Now will provide a follow up article after the suspect has been arraigned and the criminal complaint is made available.
