A Hatboro woman is facing charges after she allegedly attempted to cash a fraudulent check at a bank in Whitpain Township.
Stephanie Cook, 39, has been charged with felony counts of identity theft, forgery, receiving stolen property, theft by deception, and access device fraud, along with misdemeanor counts of possessing an instrument of crime and possessing a counterfeit access device, in connection with the Oct. 28 incident.
Police allege Cook attempted to withdraw $2,300 from an account at the TD Bank on Swede Road under the identity of the actual account owner. Cook allegedly provided the bank teller with a New Jersey driver’s license and a Visa debit card belonging to the account holder, however when told the signature on the withdrawal slip did not match the signature on file, Cook fled the scene.
A short time later, police spotted Cook driving a vehicle on Dekalb Pike that matched the description provided by the bank teller, and she was subsequently stopped and taken into custody, according to charging documents. Police added Cook’s vehicle had a stolen license plate mounted over top of the actual license plate, the report states.
Cook was arraigned by District Judge Suzan Leonard, who set bail at $15,000 unsecured. Her next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. in front of Judge Leonard.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause. This story was updated to reflect the child's current custody status.
