Congressman Fitzpatrick Added to Russia’s Ban List

Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick is no longer welcomed in Russia, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

The Middletown Township-based congressman is among 963 Americans, including President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, actor Morgan Freeman, and Montgomery County (Pa.) Judge Stephen O’Neill and hundreds of others, on the ban list released by the Russian government.

The list, which includes more than 200 members of Congress, was released recently and is Russia’s payback for the U.S. and other nations passing economic sanctions after the invasion of Ukraine.

“We emphasize that the hostile actions taken by Washington, which boomerang against the United States itself, will continue to receive a proper rebuff,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation said in statement. “Russian counter-sanctions are forced and aimed at forcing the ruling American regime, which is trying to impose a neo-colonial ‘rules-based world order’ on the rest of the world, to change its behavior, recognizing new geopolitical realities.”

The sitting three-term Republican congressman and his brother, the former congressman who died after a fight with cancer in early 2020, have been strong advocates for Ukraine over the years.

Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick has backed President Joe Biden’s measures against Russia and called for more “crippling sanctions.” The congressman said earlier in this year in a statement that the sanctions should “strike at the heart of Putin’s corrupt regime and send a clear message about the consequences Russia will suffer for invading Ukraine’s sovereign territory.”

Both the Fitzpatricks have served as co-chairs of the Congressional Ukraine Caucus.

Russia has been hit hard by the sanctions that have been imposed since the start of the nation’s invasion of Ukraine.
