Lansdale Man Charged in Hit and Run Crash Near High School

Towamencin Township Police have filed charges against a Lansdale man in connection with a hit and run crash that occurred earlier this month near North Penn High School.

First responders were dispatched to the intersection of Sumneytown Pike and Valley Forge Road at 11:41 a.m. on May 5 for a report of a two-vehicle crash. On arrival, police spoke to the victim who said she was stopped in the southbound lane of Valley Forge Road at the traffic light when she was rear-ended by a Jeep Grand Cherokee. After the light turned green, the victim proceeded through the intersection and pulled over in the TD Bank parking lot, however the Jeep continued down Valley Forge Road and fled the scene, police said.

A witness provided the Jeep’s registration to police, which was used to identify the driver as 21-year-old Kareem Rivera, of Lansdale. When contacted by police, Rivera acknowledged the accident but denied striking the vehicle and instead claimed the victim’s vehicle had reversed into his Jeep while they were waiting for the light to turn green, according to charging documents.

Rivera also claimed that he followed the victim’s vehicle to the bank parking lot, but the victim’s vehicle quickly exited onto Sumneytown Pike and fled the scene, the report states.

Police said they retrieved surveillance footage from multiple nearby cameras, which showed Rivera striking the victim’s vehicle and then fleeing the scene down Valley Forge Road after the light had turned green.

The victim suffered a concussion and a neck strain due to the crash, according to the report.

Court records show Rivera was officially charged on May 24 with misdemeanor counts of accidents involving death or injury and accidents involving damage to attended vehicles, along with summary counts of failing to stop and render aid and moving a vehicle unsafely.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 13 at 1:15 p.m. in front of District Judge Ed Levine.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
