Man Assaulted Officer Attempting to Render Aid Following Seizure, Police Say

A Bucks County man is facing a first-degree felony charge after he allegedly assaulted a police officer who was attempting to render aid after the man had a seizure at a motel in Montgomery Township.

Police were dispatched to the Rodeway Inn along the 900 block of Bethlehem Pike early Tuesday morning for a report of a male possibly having a seizure. Upon arrival, police and emergency medical personnel made contact with 41-year-old Christopher Hernandez, of Churchville, whom they described as being in a post-seizure state.

After a medical evaluation, paramedics determined Hernandez needed further medical attention and needed to be transported to the hospital, according to charging documents. Police said Hernandez refused and became irate, and eventually struck a police officer in the face and ribs who was attempting to help him off the bed.

The officer reportedly suffered injuries to their lip and ribs as a result of the assault, police said.

Hernandez was informed he was being placed under arrest, however he continued to kick and thrash at first responders as they attempted to place him on a nearby gurney, police said. They were eventually able to secure Hernandez on a gurney inside of the ambulance, at which point paramedics sedated him to prevent him from kicking first responders, according to the complaint.

Police recovered a small amount of marijuana and glass pipe from a nightstand next to the bed, the report states.

As a result of the incident, Hernandez has been charged with a first-degree felony charge of assault of a law enforcement officer, along with misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest, possession of a small amount of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, simple assault and reckless endangerment.

Hernandez remains in custody at county jail in lieu of $1,000 cash bail. His next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on June 7 at 10:30 a.m. in front of District Judge Andrea Duffy.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
