Two men are facing felony robbery and theft charges after they allegedly conspired to rob and carjack their friend at gunpoint, leaving him stranded in Lansdale Borough.
The victim told police he was at work in Quakertown at 7 p.m. on Jan. 10 when he received a call from his friend — identified as 20-year-old Kevin Umanzor, of Quakertown — asking if he could give him a ride to an undisclosed location. The victim finished his shift and picked up Umanzor and an unknown male — later identified as 18-year-old Anthony Walker, of Philadelphia — in Quakertown at 8:20 p.m., at which point Walker asked if he could drive, according to charging documents.
The report states the victim allowed Walker to drive, and when Walker asked to use the victim’s phone for GPS, the victim said alright. The three then began traveling towards an unknown destination, passing eastbound on West Main Street in Lansdale before stopping somewhere near the 600 block of Columbia Avenue, police said.
After sitting parked for 10 minutes, Walker noticed the victim texting someone from his Apple Watch and suddenly tensed up, the report states. He then pulled a handgun, pointed it at the victim’s head, then proceeded to rob him, took his watch and kicked him out of the vehicle, according to the complaint.
Police said the victim — unfamiliar with the area — eventually ended up walking to the 7-Eleven on North Broad Street in Hatfield, where he was able to dial 9-1-1. Subsequently, police were notified that the vehicle had been located unoccupied along the 3300 block of Fuller Street in Philadelphia, after the victim’s mother had tracked the vehicle to that location, the report states.
The vehicle was towed from the scene, and when police arrived to process the vehicle the following day, they noted the victim’s phone was located in the driver’s side door pocket, still powered on.
Investigators later spoke with Umanzor, who stated he was not with the victim on the night of the robbery and was instead in Philadelphia making music, police said. Umanzor repeatedly denied any involvement and said the victim never picked him up, the report states.
Using cell phone data and records, police were able to identify Walker as the unnamed driver via multiple calls and texts between him and Umanzor, police said. Additionally, through cell phone and GPS tracking of their phones, police were able to determine the two suspects and the victim were together at the times and locations the victim had described, according to the complaint.
Tracking via GPS also showed Umanzor returning to Quakertown at 9:51 p.m. and Walker being in Philadelphia at 10:53 p.m. near the location where the vehicle was recovered, police said.
As a result of the investigation:
Court records show Walker was taken into custody on April 28, and Umanzor was taken into custody the following day. Both remain free on $15,000 unsecured bail, according to court records.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
