Trinh T. Nguyen, 38, has been charged with attempted homicide after she shot her two sons — ages 9 and 13 — in the heads early Monday at their home in the 100 block of Timber Ridge Road in Upper Makefield Township, Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub told reporters Monday afternoon.
Both the boys are on life support and not expected to survive. When they pass, the charges are expected to be upgraded to homicide.
Following the shooting inside the house, Nguyen handed a neighbor a box of photos and asked the 22-year-old neighbor to give them to her ex-husband, Weintraub said. She pointed a gun at his face and pulled the trigger, but the gun didn't fire. The 22-year-old man bear hugged Nguyen and disarmed her before she fled in a minivan, the district attorney said.
After a BOLO was issued across Bucks County by authorities, Nguyen was found in her minivan outside Washington Crossing United Methodist Church on Wrightstown Road in Upper Makefield.
Officers with ballistic shields and guns drawn took her into custody, according to reports from NBC 10's Deanna Durante and Fox 29's Steve Keeley.
Weintraub said Nguyen was believed to have been on drugs at the time of her arrest.
Authorities suspect she may have planned to end her life after shooting her boys.
Nguyen is believed to have driven to New Jersey following the shooting and then returned to Upper Makefield Township, where she was captured, authorities said.
Nguyen was taken to St. Mary Medical Center in Middletown Township for evaluation. The boys' organs will be donated when they pass.
