Director Kevin Smith Says Clerks 3 will Feature Song from Local Riot Grrrl Band ‘Froggy’

The single “7-Eleven Nachos” by Doylestown-based riot grrrl/punk band Froggy caught the attention of 7-Eleven last year, which led to the corporation producing a music video. And now, with a boost from 93.3 WMMR’s “The Preston & Steve Show,” the song has caught the ear of director Kevin Smith, who is putting the song in his new film, “Clerks III.”

During an on-air interview last week with Steve Morrison of the hit 93.3 WMMR morning show, Smith, whose body of work includes “Clerks,” “Mallrats,” “Dogma” and the Jay and Silent Bob films, talked about his love for the song. Froggy fans had tagged the song when Smith put out an open call for songs in his new threequel.

“I fell in love with the song instantly, and we reached out to them and secured it – it’s in the movie,” Smith said during the interview.

Smith said the song has featured “prominently” in the film.

“In a Kevin Smith movie, finding real estate where somebody is not talking is very, very difficult. There’s rare breathing room,” he said.

The song will be featured in a scene where Clerks character Dante (Brian O’Halloran) is closing-up the Quik-Stop

“And then you hear (imitates air guitar and the opening riff to the song). It’s beautiful,” Smith said. “I dropped it into the cut when I was editing, and it played so well, that we reached out and said let’s do it. They’re locked. They’re in the movie.”

Morrison said WMMR fell in love with them “the second we found out about them.”

Thus, it just makes sense that Froggy is playing the Preston & Steve side stage at the 93.3 WMMR MMRBQ on May 21 at the Waterfront Music Pavilion in Camden, NJ, along with live band karaoke from Sidearm and a DJ set from Jacky Bam Bam.
