The No. 4 prospect in the state and
33rd-ranked high school wide receiver in the nation, the 6-foot Haynes –
who goes by "Zeed” over Yazeed on social media – is the 13th verbal commitment to Penn State’s 2023 recruiting class,
according to TribLIVE. He will wear No. 3 for the Lions.
Haynes pledged to Rutgers first on March 23, but uncommitted last month,
per Rivals.
Haynes committed to PSU on Sunday, following a Friday visit to the campus and a June 4 scholarship offer, per the report. The day before the scholarship offer, Haynes
had a "standout performance” at the Penn State prospect camp, showing off his speed and connecting on passes from PSU quarterback Marcus Stokes, another Class of 2023 commit, during 1-on-1 and 7-on-7 periods.
While Haynes was making plays on the gridiron, in his academic life, he was catching offer after offer from various colleges, including Boston College, Bowling Green, Rutgers, and West Virginia.
Haynes transferred from Philadelphia Neumann Goretti to North Penn High School in his senior year.
"Haynes is raw but he has athleticism and shows speed. He shows an ability to separate, and he can be a threat down the field. Adding strength throughout his frame and becoming a more reliable pass catcher will allow Haynes to elevate his game. There is a lot with which to work,”
wrote Lions 247Sports National Recruiting Analyst Brian Dohn.
Penn State football is led by head coach James Franklin.
